‘93 relived but not repeated

Back in 1993 the pens had a better team than they had in their 2 prior cup years and were looking to sail through the east and get back into the Stanley Cup Finals again.  All was going as planned until the Penguins met up with a nothing-to-lose New York Islander team in round 2.  The Islanders were no match on paper for the Pens and should have lost 4 straight and started their summer vacation plans, but funny (not really) how things work out.  The Penguins were the better teams and they controlled a lot of the series but after 6 games each team had won 3 games.  So onto game 7 where one bad bounce can cause the game to in a totally unexpected direction.  We all sadly know how that ended.  If not, stop reading here.

Flash forward to 2010.  The Penguins have been in the finals the past 2 years and are the current defending Stanley Cup Champions.  The Penguins are clearly the team expected to come out of the eastern conference, but once again they are in round 2 of the playoffs and heading to game 7.  The falling down mellon arena is trying to go out with a better send off than losing to an 8 seed, but if they can’t score 3 or more goals tonight or hold onto a lead, the Mellon Arena will exit in very depressing circumstances.

The penguins have all the top end talent on their side to go along with the experience and awards.  This is Game 7, not much of that matters.  The Penguins do have 3 things that do matter and are most likely the reason this will not end up a repeat of 1993, and those are Fleury, Crosby and Talbot.  They are just winners.
